Italy | Destination Wedding Photographer

Wow, life sure does slip right through our fingers doesn’t it? Sharing our honeymoon adventure on the blog was always my plan; it was just a matter of finding the time to do it. Unbelievably, here I am 10 months later and finally getting to check this task off my list of to-do’s! I hope that sharing these images and information from our travel experience can assist you in planning their dream trip to Italy.  Yes you. After our trip to Italy, we firmly believe that everyone should share in the rich culture that this beautiful country has to offer. Not for a second did it not meet our expectations; it shattered them.

Visiting Italy has always been my dream. I always had it pegged on the map, planning for it to be the first place in Europe I would get to visit. And sure enough it was. Luckily my husband shares in my affinity for good Italian food and was equally as excited to explore this beautiful country. As this was our honeymoon, we wanted to make sure every detail was perfect. Both of us neither having any experience travelling in Europe, we had no idea what we were doing. With busy jobs and planning a wedding, we reached out to Road to Italy to help us plan our perfect trip. PEOPLE; this was truly the best decision we made. Every detail was drawn out for us. Not a thing was missed, and there were zero bumps along the way. A huge thank you to them for securing all the details for us!

Upon our arrival in Rome, we were greeted warmly at the airport by a man with a sign with our names who dropped us off at Hotel Camelia. We took a quick hour to nap as we didn’t get much sleep on the 8 hour flight. We woke up ecstatic to explore Rome, eyes wide just looking around us, taking in the dark clouds that were quickly approaching {made a quick stop to grab two umbrellas; just incase} … and then it happened … the DOWNPOUR. In a matter of seconds the city was attacked by one heck of a downpour and we were DRENCHED. Rome, Travel, Italy Honeymoon, Visit Italy, Italy travel advice, Rome travel advice, Rome travel tips, Italy travel tips, International photographer, destination photographer, elopement photographer, Italian elopement photographer, Rome, Italian HoneymoonRome, Travel, Italy Honeymoon, Visit Italy, Italy travel advice, Rome travel advice, Rome travel tips, Italy travel tips, International photographer, destination photographer, elopement photographer, Italian elopement photographer, Rome, Italian Honeymoon

After three days in Rome, we were picked up by a lovely driver and transported to the train station. The train ride was an incredible experience; we were stunned by how quickly the train travelled. At one point we looked up at the screen and it showed we were travelling at 320 km/hr. The train is the easiest way of getting from one point to another. We arrived in Naples and went straight to Pompeii for a private guided tour.

Our hotel in Sorrento was our FAVOURITE hotel of the four we stayed in. We stayed just outside of Sorrento in Sant’Agnello. The prices were less expensive then staying right in Sorrento, and with a short ten minute walk into downtown Sorrento we knew it wasn’t really a sacrifice.

The stunning views of the Hotel Corallo were to die for. We made the unfortunate mistake of not prioritizing a hotel with a pool. Duh. And after a three day heat wave in Rome, non stop walking, and a bit of jet lag, all we wanted to do was soak in a pool. Upon check in the lovely girl at the front desk went through the details of the hotel. She explained the wifi, breakfast time, provided us with a map, and then said “straight out those doors is the pool”. WHAT! WHAT WHAT WHAT! The hotel had opened a brand new pool three weeks before our arrival. THIS MOMENT WAS EVERYTHING. We dropped off our bags in our room, went to get a few beers for ourselves, and hit the pool!

We had scheduled to visit Capri, but when we checked 48 hours prior it was calling for thunderstorms. We decided it was best to cancel our tour as at 150 euros each, we didn’t think it would be worth going in a storm. We were mostly disappointed as we wouldn’t be able to see the famous Capri Grotto’s, but our driver informed us that between Ravello and Positano there was  a small grotto. The elevator down nearly gave me a full fledged panic attack but it was very worth it to see this!

We gave a very very VERY sad farewell to Sorrento. If we had to pick a favouite, this area of Italy stole our hearts entirely. We hope to return oneday. However, onto Florence we went with excitement to tour somewhere new. I dragged my husband Chad straight to the Boboli Gardens. If you know me you know I have a deep love for gardening and so this was a “must see” for our trip.

For our second day on the trip we had scheduled a bus tour of several small towns in Tuscany. Looking back, this was our only regret of our trip. The tour was far too rushed with limited time in each location, and they left us to wander without maps (a big no no, with all the small tiny streets you easily get lost). If we had done it again, we would have rented a car and spent two evenings in Tuscany.

We rented a car to drive out to Passignano to meet Blayre, our wedding videographer. He happened to be in Italy at the same time as us working and we figured; why not. So off we went.  Well we left Florence an hour later then we anticipated (everyone likes to take their time in Italy you know ..), hit some traffic, and lost our creditcard in a parking machine. Yep, that happened. Still trying to erase the memory from my mind. But we finally arrived and had a wicked lunch with our friend Blayre and hit the road to see more of Tuscany.

Throughout our trip we journeyed and adventured into countless of Italy’s beautiful churches. Chads memere was a good catholic woman who unfortunately passed away a few years back. She immediately came to my mind when we entered this church, and I quickly turned around to Chad to say “I feel your memere’s presence here and think you should light a candle for her”. But I was too late. Before I even spoke a word, Chad was pulling change out of his pocket to do so and said “I’m going to light one for my memere”. It is easily one of the most stand out moments for me on our time in Venice.

On our first day in Venice we ventured across this beautiful bridge while on a tour. I marked an X on the map so that we could return to it on our final evening of our honeymoon for a romantic portrait. I can’t tell you how incredibly envious I am of Italian photographers. There are countless opportunities for remarkable photography backdrops, boasting bursts of colour or the most perfect neutral palette. I know I will return to photograph a wedding in Italy someday, so until next time Italy; ciao!
